RKT&B and Perkins Eastman architects have been retained to plan a medical campus and design the first phase of a hospital for the American Hospital in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. The new, state-of-the-art facility is scheduled for completion in 2011.

The 94-hectares medical campus, which is located on the main highway connecting the Abuja Airport with the capital center, will eventually consist of a hospital, teaching and research facilities, and a hotel. The first phase of construction will be a 100-bed hospital of 215,000 square feet designed to American Healthcare and Joint Commission International standards.

This building will represent a major advance for the most populated country in Africa by having the capability of delivering world-class medical services for the first time. The exterior of the building was designed in response to Abuja’s climatic conditions near the equator by utilizing a double shell roof system and specific types of solar control devices for each building face to moderate heat gain. A self contained energy plant will ensure continuity of critical operations. Completion of construction is planned for 2011.
