New State-of-the-Art Hospital to be Built in Abuja, Nigeria
RKT&B and Perkins
Eastman architects have been retained to plan a medical campus and design the
first phase of a hospital for the American Hospital in Abuja, the capital of
Nigeria. The new, state-of-the-art facility is scheduled for completion in
2011.
The 94-hectares
medical campus, which is located on the main highway connecting the AbujaAirport with the capital
center, will eventually consist of a hospital, teaching and research facilities,
and a hotel. The first phase of
construction will be a 100-bed hospital of 215,000 square feet designed to
American Healthcare and Joint Commission International standards.
This
building will represent a major advance for the most populated country in Africa by having the
capability of delivering world-class medical services for the first time. The exterior of the building was designed in
response to Abuja’s climatic
conditions near the equator by utilizing a double shell roof system and specific
types of solar control devices for each building face to moderate heat
gain.A self contained energy plant will
ensure continuity of critical operations.Completion of construction is planned for 2011.
