RKT&B (Rothzeid Kaiserman Thomson & Bee, P.C. Architects and Planners) is proud to announce the completion of the restoration/adaptive reuse of 455 Central Park West.
RKT&B first became involved with the project in the 1980s. Originally known as “The Towers,” this 100-unit condominium combines a new 27-story tower with the adaptive reuse of a historically significant landmark – the first cancer hospital in America – to form a 300,000 square foot ensemble.
The preservation of 455 Central Park West goes far beyond a conventional restoration; it was an extremely challenging project both technically and politically that has taken the better part of 25 years to be realized. It not only restores a significant historic building to its previous splendor but has proven to be a catalyst for the revitalization of the surrounding neighborhood.
To date, the project has received the following awards: 2005 Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award from New York Landmarks Conservancy; 2005 Preservation Award from the Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America; 2005 Gold Award for Engineering Excellence from ACEC NY (American Council of Engineering Companies of New York); Best of 2004 Annual Award, Project of the Year: Adaptive Reuse from New York Construction; and the 2004 Roger H. Corbetta Award of Merit from the Concrete Industry Board
